Many believe that God still talk to man with dreams even today. Dream interpretation is mentioned in different stories mentioned in the bible. So how to interpret the dreams we or others have? Let’s look at Joseph’s life.
Joseph is called the dream interpreter. He gave some of the most classic examples of dream interpretation in the Bible. Joseph was the youngest son of Israel, who was called Jacob, son of Isaac back in that time. Among the 12 sons, Joseph was the most beloved one of Jacob and that makes all his brothers envious.
The first recorded dream interpretation of Joseph was about field work. Joseph had a dream one night and saw the 12 sons of Israel working in the field. Suddenly the sheaves of his brothers stood around his own sheaf and bowed to it. His brothers were very angry immediately because they thought Joseph meant that they would submit to him one day. The brothers then called Joseph the “dreamer”.
The next day, Joseph told his brother and his father another dream that he had. The dream goes like this. Joseph saw the sun, the moon and eleven stars all bow to him in the centre. Everybody is angry this time and asked him “do you mean that we all are going to bow to You?” Israel was angry, too, but he thought about the dream for a while.
The dreams and the attitude of little Joseph irritated his brothers. The terrible sinful hearts of the eleven brothers were even thinking about killing this little brother together.
What can we learn from these two dream interpretation examples? We know that in dreams there are often symbols that symbolize persons or events that are important to you. But the arrangement and the numbers of the symbols we could understand more about the meaning of the dreams. We also learn that it is not always wise to tell people about your dreams, especially when it creates bad feeling or effect of someone else. In Joseph’s example, the dreams even provoked his brothers to try to kill him. How tragic is that!
Not only is the interpretation of dreams needed the guidance and help from the Holy Spirit, even the telling or keeping of the message. Lord, give me wisdom and revelations!
